Camouflage & Insignia

Royal Australian Navy
Until the early 21st century, members of the Royal Australian Navy donned a more traditional uniform. Looking for a practical alternative, the Disruptive Pattern Navy Uniform (DPNU) was introduced in 2008 and was worn on operations and training activities at sea and ashore. The DPNU was replaced by a new pattern in 2021 known as the Maritime Multicam Pattern Uniform (MMPU).

Australian Army
The Disruptive Pattern Camouflage Uniform (DPCU) was introduced in the 1980s and was worn by members of the Australian Defence Force. The patterns made the wearer harder to see in the jungle or in certain arid environments. In some operational areas in the 2000s, this camouflage was replaced by the Disruptive Pattern Desert Uniform (DPDU). Both DPCU and DPDU were gradually replaced by the Army with another pattern known as Multicam.

Royal Australian Air Force
In 1956 the Minister for Air approved the adoption of a new Air Force roundel, featuring the ‘kangaroo in motion’ in the centre. It replaced the red-white-and-blue roundel of the British Royal Air Force, which the Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Australian Navy both used. The kangaroo within the Air Force roundel always faces to the left, except when it is used on aircraft or vehicles; for those, the kangaroo should always face the front of the aircraft or vehicle.
