Australian peacekeeping in East Timor

25th anniversary

Australia has a proud history of providing peacekeeping support and humanitarian aid across the world. This month, we commemorate the 25th anniversary of Australian peacekeeping operations in East Timor.

About INTERFET

From September 1999, Australia deployed over 5,000 peacekeepers to East Timor as part of the International Force East Timor (INTERFET) operation, led by force commander Major General Peter Cosgrove. Their mission was to restore peace and security to the troubled country, provide support to UN forces already in operation, and to offer humanitarian aid to civilians in need.
INTERFET remains Australia’s largest peacekeeping operation and overseas military deployment since the Second World War.
