About the image:
“Here is their spirit, in the heart of the land they loved; and here we guard the record which they themselves made”. Charles Bean, 1948.
Combining a shrine, a world-class museum, and an extensive archive, the Australian War Memorial commemorates the sacrifice of Australians who have died in war or on operational service, leading remembrance and understanding of Australia’s wartime experience.
This photograph of the Australian War Memorial's Commemorative Area was taken following the Dawn Service on Anzac Day 2018. It depicts the Eternal Flame, forever alight in the Pool of Reflection, flanked by the Roll of Honour, which features the names of more than 103,000 members of the Australian armed forces who have died during or as a result of wartime service and certain peacekeeping operations. They stand beneath the dome of the Hall of Memory, home to the tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier, who represents all Australians killed in war.
