Black Cats
By
A.E. Minty
Many believe that the RAAF's Catalina flying boats were used only for reconnaissance patrols and search-and-rescue. In fact, around 70 per cent of all Catalina missions were very long-range offensive strikes which ranged from the Solomons to Singapore, from Cairns to the coast of China. Mine-laying operations against mainland Japan ceased only in July 1945.
Black Cats is the story of these offensive operations, told by the men who flew the missions. RAAF Catalinas, painted matte black to use the cover of night, carried the war to the enemy, often through appalling weather and against fierce opposition.
