Australia has a long and proud history of supporting international peace operations. Since 1946, Australians have served in missions around the world under the United Nations and other international partnerships.

Peace operations have evolved over time since the first military observers were deployed. While the term peacekeeping is often used to describe these operations, Australia's contributions have expanded to include peacemaking, peacebuilding, and peace enforcement. These operations can involve restoring and maintaining security, supporting the rule of law, protecting human rights, assisting communities affected by conflict, and helping to create the conditions for long-term peace and stability,

Australian defence personnel, police, and civilian peacekeepers have earned a strong reputation in the international community for their professionalism and effectiveness. While serving in challenging and often dangerous conditions, separated from family, friends and loved ones, they have served with distinction. Australians serving in peace operations have earned our gratitude, pride, and respect.
