Challenge Coin: HMT Ascot A33 Lifeboat
In honour of the Australian experience of war, and to commemorate the service and sacrifice of men and women across all conflicts, we present a collection of challenge coins and tokens - designed exclusively for the Memorial Shop.
This challenge coin depicts one of the lifeboats, from HMT Ascot (A33), used by 13 Battalion AIF during the landings at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Soldiers from the battalion went ashore under enemy fire and straight into the front line. Unfortunately, the steel lifeboat become stranded on the beach at Anzac Cove and remained there until 14 September 1921. It is now part of the Australian War Memorial's National Collection and stands on display in the First World War galleries.
The coin's obverse is embossed with a stylised design of the soldiers disembarking from the lifeboat in Anzac Cove, encircled by the words: "Australian War Memorial | HMT (A33) Ascot | Ascot Lifeboat". The reverse features a silhouette of the Australian War Memorial's commemorative area.
