Panzer Commander Hermann Balck: Germany's master tactician
Hermann Balck was one of a handful of Wehrmacht officers to receive the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. Balck began his military career in the First World War, serving three years as a company commander. At the outbreak of the Second World War he took command of a mechanised regiment of the 1st Panzer Division and fought in France. He would later see action in Greece and on the Eastern Front, where his division destroyed an entire Soviet Tank Corps and much of the Soviet 5th Tank Army. U.S. General William DePuy estimated Balck to have been 'perhaps the best division commander in the German Army'.
In this intriguing history, Stephen Robinson follows Balck's journey through the fields of France, the mountains of Greece and the steppes of Russia.
