Sandakan 1942–1945: Stories of the Local People Who Heroically Helped the Australian POWs
'This book will give a clearer picture of the sufferings of the people of Sandakan under Japanese occupation during World War II - their hardships and losses of personal privileges and normal human needs. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Sandakan for their help, for the food and medicine which they smuggled to us even though they could have lost their lives. Even after my escape, and the escape of my comrades, I could not have survived without the support of the local people. Their generosity and courage will not be forgotten.'
