General Sir William Birdwood, the first commander of Australian troops during the Great War, was a soldier’s soldier, loved and respected by those who served under him. Now largely forgotten, he had had a long, illustrious career in the Indian Army before commanding the Australians. A man of his times, he held to his core beliefs and values, and lived by them.
